BAGHDAD, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — The Iraqi military said Tuesday that its forces seized a truck carrying rockets used for attacking the Ayn al-Asad Airbase in Iraq’s western Anbar province, where U.S. troops are stationed.
At about 9:00 p.m. local time on Monday (1800 GMT), two rockets were fired on the airbase, according to a statement from the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.
The statement said that the security forces immediately searched the surrounding area and found a truck with eight unfired rockets ready for launch in the nearby town of Haditha, some 200 km northwest of the capital Baghdad.
The rockets were dismantled by explosives experts, the statement said, without providing further details.
“We reject all reckless actions and practices targeting Iraqi bases, diplomatic missions, and sites of international coalition advisors, and everything that would stir up tension in the region,” the statement added.
The Iraqi security forces are still pursuing the perpetrators of the attack, according to the statement. ■
